DSL Modem -> Router Configuration Troubles
Need a walkthrough please

Hello,

I'm going crazy trying to set this up :(

I have:

Verizon DSL service
Westell 2200 modem(with NAT)
NetworkEverywhere(linksys) 4 port router NR041
Two Windows PCs

No problem connecting straight through the modem. I had ONE pc working through the router using the cdrom to set it up but could not get #2 up.

Then I find out that the modem can be used as a router as well and I only needed a switch. Oh well I already bought the router and found out I can use IT as a switch only by turnong of DHCP and one other setting.

I HAD IT! Not for long though :( I actually had both of them connected at once and was so happy that I lost my mind and disconnected an ethernet cable to test the cable I made with my new rj45 crimper. Bad idea!

So, I'm back to square one and cannot, for the life of me, get it back where I had it.

Someone please shove me in the right direction here. If yopu need any other info, just let me know.

If you *are* using DHCP, you'll need to tell all the PC's to use it. This is done in the Network TCP/IP properties settings of each PC. Otherwise, they won't know their "identities" on your network, and won't respond to each other.

Look for "Obtain an IP address automatically" in the TCP/IP properties.

Thanks for responding!

I do have them both set to obtain ip automatically and I can get ping back and forth from the two PCs, just can't seem to get through the modem. Yet the modem works ok when connected to PC.

I keep thinking it's an IP conflict or something.

If I disconnect everything, then connect a PC to the modem, I can go to 192.168.1.1(apparently a popular default setting) and get to the config pages for the modem. It has connection status, etc. Lots of config/troublshooting stuff.

I tells me PPPoe server found.

Anyhow, the router IP is the same as above, 192.168.1.1 and I can also access the router config pages when PC is hooked to router. I did try changing the router IP to 192.168.2.1 which was suggested on some boards I read.

I feel like I've tried every possible combination but I know this thing will work because I had them running once! I had a feeling this LAN stuff was going to be tough.

well, I got it!

Ended up using the westell modem as the router and used my router as the switch. So the modem is set to PPPoE and used the uplink port to connect the router to modem.
