|Fireworks button trouble in Dreamweaver MX|
| 2:37 am on Aug 11, 2003 (gmt 0)|
Another newbie message. I've created a button in Fireworks and exported it to Dreamweaver. It's for the HOME page. I can insert it, no trouble. I preview in Explorer; all good still. When I go and press that button to go to the HOME page again, it disappears; actually, the little x shows up. In the options in Fireworks, I made sure that all the info, as best as I can tell, is going to the root folder. When I look at the root folder, it's in there. I don't want to test it by uploading for real, because then maybe I'll bugger up the whole site. It's weird too that when I lauch the page into Explorer, it shows up like an usaved page, but when I press the HOME button, the proper index.htm shows up in the url bar, put then the x shows up where the button was before. I hope this was clear enough. Thanks so much for the time. Kevin

keving, it sounds as if you have just exported your button as an image and not as images and html.
What you are describing sounds as if the "button-over" image doesn't exist (or the path to it has not been found).
If you are using your method you need to export your button using the option Export HTML and Images.
Then, in Dreamweaver, use the Insert Fireworks HTML button and navigate to the HTML with the correct name (not the images).
NB. Just rereading your post and what might be happening is that by pressing the Home button in the preview you are transferring from the temporary preview in Explorer to the "real page" in your files, where the button (or button path) doesn't exist in that state.

I could bet that is the problem. Maybe you haven’t saved the page yet; or maybe is something with the path to your files, try to use relative paths with the dot syntax to locate files inside your site.
Hope it helps.

Thanks so much for the help. To export from Fireworks, I've used the quick export option. The "path" thing you were both talking about seems to be exactly the problem. I just can't see what I'm doing wrong. Everything I need seems to be in the root folder. Weird. Kevin

I take it you have created a rollover?
If this is the case then I usually use the insert interactive images option in Dreamweaver to insert rollover images. Create two button of your different colours and use this option in Dreamweaver once you have exported them to your hard drive. I find it much easier. The wizard is very easy to use. You browse for your two buttons, give it an alt tag, and also the link for the button, in your case index.htm.
I hope this helps.
