How does Macromedia do that fade?

How does Macromedia do that vignette or fade in the background of their site?

It uses a background image on the body tag of less than 1k and repeats it across the x-axis.

The image is formed (I presume) by using a linear gradient in Fireworks and exporting as a .jpg.
