There seem to be a lot of similarities between developing an open source project and developing a community where people contribute there ideas to.

Similarities, too, in developing volunteers like mods (or developers) who are willing to spend quite a bit of time on an activity without compensation.
Managing these volunteers can be a challenge, too, just like in real life.
