This looks good

I don't want to alarm anyone... but the WWW2 I am seeing is showing signs of the re-application of the previous penalty.
The domains previously missing for me, which were re-instated last time round, are gone again. For the record there is nothing wrong with the sites except for maybe sloppy linking.
Maybe it's a temporary situation. We can only hope.

Agreed, mix bag of nuts - this update, some up, some down. Nothing severe, but tried a stunt and it definetly back fired, changed index title to company name thinking that the meta desc and content to carry it at its present position. no chance, changed back to winning formula, competing against very spammy sites.

Looks all good to me - no big changes so far
1:10 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
Well it looks like Google finally made it round to my site as late as November 23rd ... though I can't see the Googlebot in my log files??? Lousy log files $%#@!
Looking good for me so far ... some upward movement. Can't wait to see what happens when it settles down. Keeping fingers and toes crossed for everyone!
1:57 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
yes napolean, my site is buried deep down, lots of pages dropped. non-profit site, no tricks. one of the sites that got the 'penalty' earlier - for no apparent reason.
only the index page and a handful of new pages since last update - though the bot crawled most of the new pages since last crawl - sometimes twice.
2:59 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
Yep - penalty back big time for me. Now show up at 115 for my own name (my usual benchmark). First time it happened, I worried - now I just let them do their thing! Doesn't seem to effect me that much traffic-wise (thank goodness).

'Doesn't seem to effect me that much traffic-wise (thank goodness)'
I wish I could say the same ;) - I just don't get it; it's either boom or bust. I long for the old +20 again. When that was happening users would at least dig the serps down to the third page.
And it seems like it's always the same sites, flip-flopping each month.

www2 is also showing significantly more results on some terms too (up to 20% in a few cases)
4:45 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
My site went live on October 11, and I've been waiting for more than a handful of pages to get into Google. This morning I was happy to find 2,560 pages on www2.google.com, with some ranking in the #1 position for their search strings.
However, when I click through to the pages, the Google toolbar doesn't show any pagerank in most cases. Is this because the pages aren't yet in the main index, and the toolbar is getting its pagerank info from the main index?
5:07 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
The directory has updated! Or is this old news? (jumped about 60 places though :) )
efv: That`s correct about the pagerank doesn`t display until www is updated. How can you see how many pages that have been included?
5:14 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
That's right, the toolbar PR relates to the current index. So until the updated index is on www you won't see any PR for new pages. We just need to be patient until it all settles down.

>>efv: That`s correct about the pagerank doesn`t display until www is updated. How can you see how many pages that have been included?<<
I have "imboden" (my last name) in the header of every page on my site, so I used the search string:

Yes bobriggs - it does seem to be the same sites. Difference I see in this penalty is that my PageRank has now dropped to 0 as opposed to PR of around 2 last penalty round (no green bar in directory this time) - but still not a full ban. The pages are in (not just the Google directory listing), just buried so deep, they may as well be banned.
Although I certainly don't like this, I've spent a lot of effort building traffic away from Google which has paid off - not just for my site - but for clients as well. Even when I am not penalised (as in last month when I did pretty well), Google equates to no more than 15-20% of traffic. Very significant but not a killer if the penalty kicks in.
My concern is that Google seems to applying the penalty for what I may do on other sites - not on my own - which is squeaky clean for Google!

This update is pretty good for me as far as rankings go, but Google still has just 17 out of about 50 pages listed from one of my sites. Last update it indexed 18 of them, now just 17. The weird thing is that some of these indexed pages can only have been found by following a link from a sub page, and this sub page is one of the pages NOT being indexed. It's just like skipping over it and indexing other pages. Weird... Anyone else seeing anything like this?
6:51 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
hhmmm, Checking on www2 for my keyphrase positions, i'm seeing lots of -6/7 in positions, some the same and some gone completely. It has picked up 100 or so new pages. mmmmm, interesting time will tell. Heres goes the google rollercoaster ride again, Hold on tight everybody!!!!
and good luck

Ah!!!! My site got slaughtered! Went from ranking 20 (all the other 19 were manufacturers) to zero ranking at all. Not even a ranking bar for my site! :( And google was a big traffic boost for us too! Tips please anyone?

Thanks for being awake, this time it was good news. SEO is all fun when your work is paying off
9:01 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
This update looks good for me. Went from obscurity on one of my main phrases to 1st page (no cloaking, plain html pages).
9:53 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
Well, serch results have improved, but I lost ground in Page Rank ranking. Was #1 in my category for a brief 28 days and am now #5. I don't understand the PR stuff?
10:02 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
Looking REALLY good, back on all keywords, looks like even better than before the last update!
Hope this one sticks...
10:56 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
Ack! I hope there are many changes before this settles. We've been slaughtered in this update for no apparent reason. I have at least 3 domains with listings on ODP that have not yet been picked up by Google in the past 3 updates. Any advice on getting new domains picked up?
They are now showing the old cache of our main page which was updated by them about a week ago. Seems we're going in reverse. :(

I would submit the DMOZ cats to Google and I would also link your new domains to some or all of your sites that are currently spidered by Google.
Hey all, I just noticed that the serps page on www2 has a page rank at the moment on the toolbar but www and www3 do not...it would seem that this is related the update on www2...anyone have any theories on this?
11:17 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
You mean actually submit the categories the sites are listed in on DMOZ? Hmm.. never thought of that. All of my sites have links to every other site, so that part was done when the site was made. I'm going to wait a week or so until this thing settles.
11:59 pm on Nov 25, 2001 (gmt 0)
OH no, here we go again another month with the 0 page rank penalty. I had removed all the cross linking and I thought I was back in for good. Now I'm lost I don't have a clue why my sites were given the penalty....=(
12:28 am on Nov 26, 2001 (gmt 0)
All my sites just moved up BIG TIME:)
Listen up all, it is easy, no tricks involved. I think alot of you keep trying to trick google, which is why you have rankings jumping up and down.
1) pick 1 keyword
2) make a good page related to that KW.
3) E-mail lots of related sites and trade links with them.
4 use KW in the title.
It takes time , time...time....time.
Google tells you how to do it right, why try to spam and cheat? Just do it right the first time, and you wont have to worry.
12:32 am on Nov 26, 2001 (gmt 0)
Chadlerh, Yup...Everything was back to "normal" last month and I felt pretty damn good! Now the same sites that were buried in September have been reburied. A puzzlement. Never did get a reply from Google about this issue.
Seems like I've been getting different results on www,www2, and www3.
1:27 am on Nov 26, 2001 (gmt 0)
When PR drop to 0 and the little green bar vanishes it is often an indication that Google had problems spidering the site. If a site happens to be down when Google comes around that will do it. My experience has been that the site will vanish for 1-3 months.:(
2:26 am on Nov 26, 2001 (gmt 0)
>You mean actually submit the categories the sites are listed in on DMOZ?
Yep, it gets spidered (or re-spidered) and it gives you a link from DMOZ in googles eyes...
welcome to WMW & rest assured that many folks here do not use tricks with Google.
I'm referring to the PR of the serps for the www's. Try any search and you will see what I mean...
