I know that 48 hours after you sign up, you are supposed to be able to invite two people...

Where are these invites located at inside of gmail?

Mine is at the top,
"Show search options Create a filter Invite a friend to join Gmail!"

Are you sure you get them just after two days?

Not everyone can invite people. I read somewhere that the invites started with google employees who could invite 50 people. Those 50 could invite 2 more. Then it stops there.

I wouldn't expect any offer to invite now because of the brisk selling on ebay.
My opinion, Google will let the those connected to the company and the freemarket dispence Gmail accounts at a managable pace until the launch.
