Best way to move off Geocities...

I have a free Geocities site that I am moving to a new paid web hosting service.

My question is how should I handle redirecting the traffic to the new site? I've heard of these 301 redirects, but with Geocities I don't believe you have that kind of control. I was just going to replace the homepage of the old Geocities site with a simple old link to the new site. Is this the best?

I'm also concerned about search engines... I want the new site to get indexed as quickly as possible, but I assume the spider will see the link from the old page and get the new site via it, right?

Search for meta redirect.

If you also have a link on the page itself, there's no way search engines should have a problem with it. Also, for each page on your site, google link:pageURL to get a list of people linking to you- then ask them to kindly update their links.

It should be much easier to be found by search engines once you're off of Geocities! :)
