Download .sql file in ASCII or Binary Mode?

 5:55 am on Mar 17, 2004 (gmt 0)

We have a dump.sql file which is a daily backup from the database on our UNIX server. I then download the dump.sql file to my local Windows computer. My question is: Do I download it in ASCII or Binary mode? I used to download it in ASCII mode. But then I found the following instructions from WS_FTP:

Binary mode is used for transferring files that are not text (ASCII files). Executable programs, word processing documents, spreadsheets, databases, graphics files, and sound files are some examples of files that must be transferred in binary mode.

So what do the experts say?

If the sql is just standard text, it will download fine in ASCII. I often tend to use binary transfer though, just because it keeps line endings and other whitespace intact when moving from one OS to another (bringing a UNIX generated text file down to a Windows or MAC development platform). It will still open just fine in any text editor.
