Tell me about Hotbot.
Exactly the same results on Hotbot and MSN: not close to Inktomi

 3:28 pm on Feb 6, 2004 (gmt 0)

I am so confused about MSN results.

For one of my search terms, I'm #1 on inktomi pure search (#1 on google, fast and yahoo as well). I used to be #2 on MSN when they used Looksmart.

Now I'm #30 on MSN, and the MSN results I see are exactly the same ones I see on Hotbot.

If MSN and Hotbot are powered by Inktomi, then why are the results so drastically different? My site does far better on Inktomi than it ever did on Looksmart, but I'm just about invisible on MSN now. I don't get it.

I'd apprieciate any knowledge about how Hotbot works, or whether other people are seeing the same thing.

After the sponsered listings I get the same results in HB and MSN?

I would not say HotBot and MSN are identical, but they are quite close, and sometimes very different from Ink. (Of course we're tallking about the "web pages" sections here).

For one thing, as I just noted in another thread, both MSN and HotBot downgrade non-U.S. sites. I've seen first page results fall to 30 or 40, and have even seen a #1 result that fell off completely. This can happen even with .com URLs.

Of course, there may be other algorithms at work in your case. (Whatever happened to the *world* wide web).
