I've been seeing it too. Actually they have been rotating between directory and non-directory without me having to flush the cookie. Maybe they are doing a little A/B testing to see if they should renew the contract a little bit more ;)

Mountain Time zone -- PACKED with LS results.
What's going on?!

We should be so lucky.....
2:59 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
Are we sure it's LS? Saw it earlier today, but doesn't look like the old MSN SERP's prior to the recent changeover...looks more like something entirely new.
I'm wondering if MSN is testing, or implementing, a new filter/algo on top of the INK index...
3:07 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
Seeing it also (West Coast). It says directory right there and there's pages and pages of it before Ink.
3:37 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
Marcia, good point. I wasn't paying attention to that...
However, at least in the category we stare at most of the time, these SERP's are *not* at all like those that were there right before the changeover to INK. We have the benefit of a snapshot of M$S just before the changeover. (We're thorough that way, but we did it to compare the two indexes, not because we anticipated a rollback... :-) ).
Instead, what I'm looking at in this one category, is a new Googlesque set of SERP's, meaning that I see more corporate sites, big directories, and edu/org sites than were there for the same two word competitive search, just prior to the very recent changeover.
Could it be that M$N is testing a filter or algo on top of the old LS index, since that index is well known to them? Hmmm. Maybe that makes no sense. I think this will take someone who sees what I see, and has far more knowledge than I in this area.

Same here in Midwest.

It makes perfect sense that MSN held Looksmart hostage, waited, and now got a better price or just flat acquired them for much less than it would have cost a few months ago. Seems like that would be pretty inevitable. No way would MSN want to go through the year using Ink.
This looks like the December batch of Looksmart results though... very few non-paid/Zeal results, if any.
4:05 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
What a shame - the MSN serps were actually showing decent results - now people have to wade through all these LookSmart Amazon affiliate links and etc. bleah.
4:14 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
very few non-paid/Zeal results, if any
Nope...Plenty of Zeal...and I like that.
4:18 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
Am I the only one seeing a big difference versus the prior LS SERP's?
steveb, not sure I see this as the Dec. LS...in my catgegory there are definitely new sites in the top ten that were never there before. We moved up too, higher than we'd ever been (except for the last few days when it was INK).
Mainly a bunch of drek, indeed (my site excluded of course). So far, 2004 is prooving to be an interesting year...as in the Chinese curse: "May you lead an interesting life."

Exactly what Im seeing for serps 1-10 for several queries.
5:56 am on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
I'm not seeing anything I know was listed via Zeal. I am seeing legacy LS listings that aren't paid.
6:31 pm on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
I really hope the Zeal listings come back..I lost about 25% of my traffic when MS dropped them.
6:44 pm on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
By the way - Has anyone noticed that Zeal is displaying Google AdWords at the bottom of their directory pages? Hmmm..
9:51 pm on Jan 27, 2004 (gmt 0)
These L$ results that MSN is displaying are different.
There's no redirect tracking link. Mouse over the link, and you'll see a clean link with no redirect to count it.
Sunday night I deleted my L$ listings entirely. L$ was still debiting the few dollars remaining in my account (at the rate of $0.15 per MSN click) even though their directory listings were no longer in MSN. Turns out their tracking links were showing up on the INK MSN listings (i.e. that's the 'Web Pages' section). You could see a L$ redirect tracking link when you moused over my INK listing in the MSN 'Web Pages' listings (which is all they were showing until yesterday).
Now the L$ directory listings are back in MSN. No L$ redirect tracking links are showing for either the L$ listings or INK listings.
The A/B split testing theory makes sense, except there are no redirect tracking links, so I doubt that's what they are doing.
I am not sure what's up. Fortunately I rank well in both INK and L$.

Gone for me too.
That was weird.
3:31 am on Jan 28, 2004 (gmt 0)
I wonder if that's something new. Maybe that will be the new MSN, directory then search results.
Why would they test it like that?
3:49 am on Jan 28, 2004 (gmt 0)
If you mean LS gone ... again ... yes here too. Weird indeed. Smells like a test but odd if so.
Or, maybe someone just leaned back on a switch and no one noticed for a day or so.
Whatever ... life goes on ... confusion reigns, at least inside my head.

Zeal and LS results still showing up on MSN here (msn.ca).
7:33 am on Jan 28, 2004 (gmt 0)
gone here in Northern Calfornia.
7:55 am on Jan 28, 2004 (gmt 0)
Gone here in SoCal, but worth a second look while they were there. I've always used how many LS pages there were to figure out relative worth and difficulty of search terms when thinking about pages and keywords for sites.

Looks like LS is back in MSN.com in PA? Anyone else seeing this? They were gone for almost a week here?
10:18 pm on Feb 2, 2004 (gmt 0)
Seeing LookSmart again here.

Seeing it again, and traffic doubled on one of my newer sites :)
7:05 pm on Feb 3, 2004 (gmt 0)
IF M$ is going to keep using these LS listings, it might make sense to at least update them a bit. They are as stale as old bread.
Pretty soon I'm going to start sending my friends to PT's 'pure search' page, just to find decent SERP's.
12:51 am on Feb 4, 2004 (gmt 0)
LS is gone again this evening from the MSN.com pages here in PA? Very strange? Anyone else seeing this?
12:27 pm on Feb 4, 2004 (gmt 0)
clear your cache and reload your browser and see if you still have Web Directory results in MSN.com? I don`t have any in PA.
