I was doing some searching on AltaVista (snickers to /dev/null/ please) and I tried to use the case-sensitive feature of its search. It failed. I did a bit more noodling and couldn't get it to work.

After some experimenting I noticed that phrases were case-sensitive, but individual words were not. So for example if I did a search for PETS, I got almost five million results. But if I did a search for "PETS", I got 162,000.

Is this new? Did I miss it? Has anyone else experimented with this? Tnx.

I didn't have time to play around with this yesterday but it looks like you're right.

It used to be:

new red widget - not case sensitive
New Red Widget - case sensitive
NEW RED WIDGET - case sensitive
"New Red Widget" - case & phrase sensitive
"NEW RED WIDGET" - case & phrase sensitive

It now looks like the first three are all case insensitive. Don't know when this changed.
