Altavista ranks 55 in Alexa
but where's the traffic?

With the news of Daum to use Google search results, looking for the top sites looked like a good idea.

I noticed that Altavista is currently 55th in the rankings but how and why? The traffic our site gets from this SE is minimal to say the least - does paid inclusion really count that much with AV?

I doubt if it has anything to do with paid inclusion.

One site I promote ranks #1 of the non sponsored sites in AltaVista on the most typed in keyword. Sponsored listings included it is in 5th position.

In Google this same site ranks 5th for the same keyword - no Premium listing for this term - so it sits on exactly the same position on the first page.

Google and their related sites bring over 80% of traffic for that keyword and Alta less then 0.5% (!).

This is an established site that has been aroud for years and never paid for any inclusion. For new sites it may be a different story, I have some problems getting them ranked in Alta properly.

But why should pay for being index with the above results in mind? Or bother spending time optimising?

AV still has a bit of an international following. That could skew the results, so even though people like myself that only sell in the US get 0 for traffic despite good rankings, it could be a different story elsewhere...

Oh I don't. I've never bothered to much with AV. Sure we check our main phrases now and then but that's about it. What I couldn't understand was why AV is ranked 55th when it is obviously out of main stream.

Our site and company is International but hits from AV are still minimal.

The only thing I can think of as to why AV is still ranked so highly is because of it's previous popularity and having large numbers of links to it...?

Jeremy: this is a non English site.

According to the Alexa breakdown 56 % uses altavista.com, which is www which is the non country specific search site. Perhaps the Koreans?
