HTML is a sexually transmitted disease, say many Americans
...among other things.

The Personal Computer Memory Card International Association's eponymous 1990 PCMCIA card standard used to jokingly be decoded as People Can't Memorise Computer Industry Acronyms.

Nearly a quarter of a century later that jape has been proven anew, after an online coupons outfit called Vouchercloud let The Los Angeles Times publish the “results” of a “study” of “2,392 men and women 18 years of age or older” who were asked to decode some more recent technology terms.

The headline finding is that 11 per cent thought “HTML” is a sexually transmitted disease.

Why am I not surprised?

You're right, there's no hope for some of them.

Tell tell them there's no cure and we need them to donate funds to help research into sites of serious html.

“HTML” is a sexually transmitted disease.

Well, duh! It's obviously spread through a computer virus. And dirty reads from a database are the second biggest cause.

The very best surveys are the ones that ask about facts or knowledge rather than opinions. Remember the one from the late 70's which revealed interestingly that nobody had actually voted for Richard Nixon?

Ah, but you are not as blissfully wrong about as much as we are! The British public manage to be wrong about the facts of nearly every political issue they manage to feel so strongly about:

There's a youtube video that was asking University students to name one Senator, not even their Senator but a single Senator. Granted they picked out the ones that couldn't but the fact that they couldn't is ridiculous.

One of the people involved with phpBB related a story to me about telling his professor he was going to do an essay or whatever on PHP. Thought he meant PCP....

I hope that the university was in a country that has a senate!

It is much, much less than 20 years since I spent a long time racking my brains trying to figure out why I had a leftover copy of a document even though I was certain I had mailed one and faxed the other...
