Added Words to Microsoft Word Document But File Size Is Smaller

I added a couple of hundred words to a Microsoft Word document. I checked the file size of the document after adding the words and it is smaller than before I added the words.

I tried to find some information about this on the Internet but didn't really find anything.

Can anyone tell me why this may be so?

Thanks.

One possible reason is how MS Word saves versions of a document. This is especially true in the more recent, feature-rich, versions of Word. When you start out, you are saving many possible versions of different margins, fonts, etc. As you save more and more, some those complex "possible" versions that you did not use are pushed aside.
