The mobile phone turns 40 years old

On this day in 1973, the most important phone call in technology history was made.

Using a prototype Motorola DynaTAC, inventor Martin Cooper made the first call on a mobile phone. Forty years later, it's considered a brick compared to the diminutive devices we carry around.

Diminutive? With more and more function they seem to be getting larger again.

It was the last of the big breakthroughs of the last 100 years (it was preceded jet engines, antibiotics, the electronic computer, the transistor and integrated circuit, etc.)
