Look in the top right-hand corner of your window and click on your avatar. Then you'll get a sign out link. I was quite annoyed as well until I finally found it.

I don't have an avatar, I use standard html display (can't be doing with any fancy stuff in my email). Just searched again and can find no trace of the sign out. This happened about a year ago, then it re-appeared in the top right of window. Now it is gone again. I do not want to be signed in to G all the time! Might just have to dump Gmail. I was never happy that signing in to one service, signed me in to all. I'd like the power to choose where I am signed in. Oh well......

Yes, depending upon the setup you have, it is there, top right, a drop down next to your e-mail address. Some accounts show a more sophisticated menu on the top right.

Ahhhh, found it. Well, that's intuitive! Not...... Not so much check in never leave, so much as track me all over the place. For me there are too many usability issues with Gs services. Gonna wean myself off them.... :) Thanks for the help guys, though, I shouldn't have needed it.
