I sometimes get spam email that makes me wonder.

One type that makes me wonder a lot is email advertising how they would like to help me rank in Google?!

Well, thanks but no thanks. I rank pretty fine for anything I want to rank for, so STFU and go play on the highway

I mean... I know it's just bulk email and they have no way of knowing who will receive their crap, but then.... Twice in a few months people have actually used the contact form on my web site to post such a message to me

So, they actually found my web site somewhere (Google, perhaps?) and decided that I'm likely a potential customer of SEO-services...

Honestly, how stupid can people be?

Anybody else got spammed by clueless SEO-wannabees?

---
guess I just needed to vent a little....

What makes me even wonder more is all those SEO companies trying to acquire new customers by phone. The phone calls usually go something like this:

-"Hello, we are company xy and we want to show how to improve your Search Engine Rankings."

-"Where did you get my phone number"

-"From your website".

-"How did you find my website"

-"I did a search for 'widget', and clicked on the top spot."

D'oh!...

Oddly enough, those kind of offers dwindled dramatically about three years back when I opted to whitelist tobots.txt instead of dealing with alligators in the swamp. The only time I ever responded to one of those email begs to make me rich and famous came from one so poorly worded (English obviously not the writer's native language) that I replied: "You found me. so I'm doing all right. You, however, are unknown to me. Perhaps I can give you some advice?"

Never heard from them again.

I'd say we're pretty much swamped by them. Both on website forms and e-mails. Many are using gmail addresses, with no phone number or address. Who, in the right minds, would employ an anonymous seo approaching like that!

The phone calls are often over PPC. They spotted an ad, and go into sales pitch about how much better they are and how cheap they are. The most annoying thing about the phone calls is the deception by saying they are from Google or Yahoo. When challenged, they deny they said that. grrr

I got one the other day telling me for $10,000 they could get me in the top 5.

Thanks I am #3

I think I will keep my $10Gs

If they just did a little research they could save themselves so much money in printing and mailing this crap out.

Why people can't do targeted marketing I will never understand.

To me it makes more sense to research websites and then send 5 letters out to 5 people who will be receptive to it rather than sending out 5000 letters and hope it speaks to 1 person.

I guess when you charge $10Gs you can afford to waste money sending this crap out.

The worst thing though is when my clients get one of these and ask me to explain it. Often they something like

"Achieve top results! Your site could be ranked at the top of Google"

And my clients start on about how they want this.... It usually takes me 1 minute to show them they already enjoy top spots. But they almost always call like this spam mail has pointed out some flaw in their current site and I need to take action.

I remember getting an e-mail pointing out that one of our sites was showing on the 7th page of a Google search for "Venus maternity clothes" and that they can get me to the top of page 1.

I replied, thanking him for pointing this out to us and that we were very upset that our travel site was only showing on page 7 for "Venus maternity clothes" and that our entire marketing department (this was back in the days before "SEO" was popularized) had been sacked because of this.

That is most of the phone calls I get. They see the PPC ad and offer to help with the organic.

Were the ones responsible for the ones been sacked, also sacked when they also couldn't get you past page 7? ;)

I have had SEO cold calls to the phone number I have posted for people to contact me about SEO. I guess they missed the part where I'm selling it, not buying. I can see how it would be difficult being that the entire website is about how I sell SEO services.

Unfortunately not. We went with a team of 40 Ecuadorian llamas. They unionized and now we can't get rid of any of them.

Unionised llama's are very dangerous..just watch out when/if they start biting people's sisters..if they haven't already.
