That's a polite way of saying "When I Feel Like It" :)
|So what excactly do you mean when you say you'll get back "shortly," or when using a similar phrase? |
When I use it, I am being purposely ambiguous as to when I will actually get back to the person.
It could be that I really do intend to get back to them quickly, but realize that other issues may come up that delay my getting back to them.
But more likely it is a low priority issue with me and I have no intention of actually getting back to them quickly, but don't want to inform them of that because that will just make them more insistant.
There's also a possibilty that I am trying to guage how important the issue is to them, which can be determined by how long they feel "shortly" has expired.
I used to have one of those on my bench when I was a welder/boilermaker like Bigyun
i think it depends the type of person you are talking to.
1) You call IT support and they say they'll get back to you shortly. (anywhere between 1 hour and 3 days)
2) You want to make a fairly large purchase (usually about 2-15mins)
3) You send google an email and they say they will contact you shortly (anywhere between 1 and 5 mins for auto response and between 1 month and never for a real response)
That is so true briggidere.
Good one, briggidere!
In this case it's one of the Amazons!
It's strange this thread came up today. I received an email from YSM saying that they would get back to me shortly...

Enjoy the wait. Hope in your case it's not waiting for owed money like it is for me.
I know in Mexico maņana (tomorrow) is about 3 weeks.
|waiting for owed money like it is for me |
Oh, you didn't say you were owed money.
In that case "contact" means, one time only, calling your daytime phone in the evening or your evening phone at lunch, and let it ring maybe twice.
Polite persistence is called for.
I'm waiting for a refund for some suspicious clicks...hmmm
Everybody knows that maņana does not mean tomorrow, it means not today.....;)
Just like a musicians check is in the post....LOL
Well, I got another "shortly" very early afternoon today; totally different entity and project, but hailing directly or indirectly from the same region:
"I will pen down some thoughts and get back to you with some advice shortly."
I'm still waiting and, in the mean time, looking for someone else to help. But my requirements will be that they have nothing at all to do with *that* region, be they the first, second or third generation.
Heck, all I want to do is pay a qualified person to appraise my site, which I may put up for sale. Why is this so difficult?
I will contact someone else maņana. Err, I think.
In answer to the original question: within 10 minutes
On a related topic - there seem to be a lot of people who misunderstand the meaning of 'a couple' and think it a flexible number from about two to five.
