I did an SEO proposal for a company about six months ago. They decided to go with another company. This morning I got a call from the owner of the company. When the keyword was searched my proposal was ranking ahead of thier site (Way ahead). They thought I was redirecting or had "messed up their site". When I explained that the proposal was just better optimized than their actual site they were a little concerned to say the least. I pulled the proposal off of my site and they think that will help. Not sure if I should like for cry about this one.

i definately wouldn't have pulled the proposal. I think i would add to it.
If you havn't mentioned their company name in it you could say that one of the sites below your listing asked for this proposal and chose not to take you on. now you rank way above their site and just for a one page proposal, so if you had a site to work with, where could that take it, sort of thing.
Did you try to get the business back when you spoke to them?
Can you leave it on there and sell them some leads or sales?

When I was a journalism student (many years ago) I did a three-part feature story for a reporting class. The professor gave me a B, but I had submitted it to the state's major metro newspaper who published it on the front page for three days in a row. Not bad for B work.
And, we have all done this. One of the best hires I ever made what my second choice when my first choice changed her mind about taking the job.
