Filesizes and download times of .flv files

I've started looking at adding short .flv files to be streamed on some of my pages.

So far they're working but I'm a little unsure about whether I've set things up as well as they could be.

Firstly the files are a little large (larger than the .avi files their based upon), for example a 5.5MB .avi becomes a 12.7MB .flv. Is this typical of .flv files or could I get them smaller?

Secondly,if 10-15MB .flv files are the norm, what kind of connection is needed to play such files without extensive buffering. I appear to need all of my 2MB connection to manage this. Is this about right and how practical is it to have files which require such a connection to play (is it o.k to assume people will have such connections - visitors to the pages are likely to be from either the UK or the US and if not will most put up will the buffering?)?
