I think so. People "like" far too many pages nowadays, fan pages have less and less chance of staying on people's timeline/feed for more than few minutes.

Ahh... one thing I see is that the Likebox (not the button but the BOX) ONLY works on Facebook Fan pages.
Is there some way to get a Likebox effect (i.e., have faces of people) for the home page of a site?
I see there is a facepile function, but that only shows the photos of people who are already FRIENDS of the person visiting.
We would like to show the faces of people who have visited the site even if they are NOT friends with the visitor. Is that possible?

The Facepile Social Plugin only shows friends to friends...
Why is nothing displaying?
The plugin only displays friends photos. If the user does not have friends who have liked your page or have connected to your site, no faces will be shown.

I removed all "Like" buttons, links to FB and other such promotions of Facebook from all sites some time ago -- for exactly the reasons you've (now) figured out.
The only way I've found to use FB is to post brief teasers with links to my sites -- but the conversion rate is abysmal, and IMO -- not worth the time.

Oddly enough, my conversion RATE from facebook is a lot HIGHER than my conversion rate from regular organic search engines - even though we don;t do much posting on facebook.

Made a sale from Facebook the other day.
A lady in Australia saw my ad and clicked on my website and bought one of our products.
But yes, there is a lot to learn about Facebkook fan pages and likes etc etc, and how to get low click rates.
