Facebook's Zuckerberg Says It Will Launch 'something awesome' Next Week [reuters.com]
Facebook, the world's biggest social networking website, is set to launch a new feature next week, possibly in the mobile or tablet arena, its CEO said.

Chief Executive and founder Mark Zuckerberg told reporters in a visit to Facebook's Seattle office on Wednesday that the company planned to "launch something awesome" next week.

He said the project had been developed at the 40-person Seattle office, Facebook's only major engineering center outside of its Palo Alto, California headquarters.

A Facebook spokesman declined to provide further details about Zuckerberg's comments.

Any guesses or informed guesses?

A new search engine would be awesome but I suspect our definitions of awesome & Facebooks mission differ.

My guess would be they have collected names and email addresses and now they will create facebook accounts for all those people who have none yet.

"A new feature"? Yep, folks: don't start slobbering over Google Pluzz. Facebook's still got something. Something.

Hehehe, refreshing. An unofficial +1

Add to that create accounts for all your yet unborn children because they can see the baby bumps in the image recognition software. And here's one avenue where they will actually co-operate with Google -- giving them naming rights to your child -- because obviously you want Google to tell you anyway.

If you want to see what your next child will look like (DNA profiling complements of Google and "partners") and what it's name will be, tune in to Facebook next week. Friday funnies.

Lots of rumors about an iPad/Tablet version popping up. Not sure if that would be "awesome".

I'm from the future and can tell you that it's time travel. The launch is a mess though with the teleprompter breaking down and a dog gets loose, but it's all smiles in the end.

Whatever it's going to be it probably wasn't actually ready for roll-out, not even next week, but they are no doubt making this announcement to take some of the attention away from Google's social thing that is launching.

Lot's of overtime for the next week for that team in Seattle, hope they didn't have any plans for July 4.

Something with the word "cloud" in it? Maybe a facecloud? Or a Cloudbook? iFaceCloud? Mabe it will be awesomely cloudy in Seattle? BTW: still waiting for a CloudPad... maybe a cover for the iPad in a cloudy shape?

I say the thingy be called a FacePlate, resembling a frisbee like device, with a Big Blue F on it and looking xaklee LIKE your @$^, also in pink and aqua, zuckered(as in sweetened). The F will stand for ssssssssomething too.

If they can get businesses seriously on facebook (and by that, I mean get people to make their purchasing decisions and research on facebook) that would be something awesome. Throw in some type of facebookonly serach engine, and it'd be game on for the search wars.

But Timberlake just got involved in the maybe-pheonix of myspace, so they'd better come up with something awesome - facebook may have some potentially very serious competition.

They're going to fix all the JS and AJAX errors and the site will actually work cross-browser?

No, can't be, that'll take forever.

If it's search related, didn't they recently partner with Bing in some manner? Seems unlikely they would have done that if they had their own search engine in development? I don't know Facebook looks like behind the wall so these are questions.

That should be good to draw 500,000 actual users out from under rocks and signing up just in time to hype up the IPO.

Yikes. On the company I work for, a lot of bandwith is consumed by FB users... lots of chats were blocked and people switched to FB as that just works, ok, that was only text and images, now they are unleasing a beast.

Don't forget to adjust your privacy settings before you use it, because all video communication will be set to public by default. Meaning the whole world can watch.

How many teenage girls are going to find that their friend "Britney" whom they thought to be another teenage girl is actually a 45 year old guy called Burt who weighs 280lbs and lives in his Ma's basement..and that despite the blond wig and lipstick he wears..he really doesnt' "look like Lady Gaga's lil' sister would"..or maybe his webcam will always be "broken".

And how many people are going to do and says things on camera during facepalm video chat that are going to go aaaaaaall over the internet and haunt them forever..

Of course they could just move or change their name, or have plastic surgery..and ads for such things will eventually be provided in a sidebar.
