I've had a few "strange looking" FB messages as well. If it ain't kosher I don't click... but given FB's size and dominance on the web, it won't be long before the bad boys descend... That said, FB does seem to be quickly reactive (if not completely pro-active) in dealing with these things.

I found the "message" setting on my profile, I've updated it so that only friends can send me messages, it was set to "Everyone"

you need to make your account private, and make it view by your friends only to avoid spams.
