Strange bug or spam in FB pages
What is causing this?

 11:49 am on Sep 26, 2010 (gmt 0)

I was searching for a large, global bank for its presence in Facebook and was staggered to find that there are over 500 empty Community pages attributed to it, but bearing nonsensical words and dictionary words, e.g. "gibberish (name of bank)" and the rare valid name relating to banking or an actual division of this bank. Many, but not all have a Wikipedia tab.

I think FB only lets you see 500 search results, so the total count might be larger. I doubt if a human could have done this. Has anyone observed this before?

no, not that many, although I have seen evidence of bot generated pages

Yes, bot-generated fits the pattern, but to what end? I just saw a small number generated for the Bank of America too. (Not the one I saw earlier)

Honestly, I don't know. At first I thought it was proof of concept but now I think it was more of a phishing scam that was maybe shut down(?) It is pretty amazing what this app thing does to their search...
