August to September is a big shift - for us it means everyone's back at work and making those purchasing decisions they put off while the boss was in Tuscany. I like September..

Our sales are up 60% so far over the dog-days of August. Customers seem to be in a buying mood right now.

check out google trends to see if your main keyword phrases have a slump during this time of year - we saw a similar decrease and were able to identify that there were similar slumps in 2004 and 2005.

Like LifeinAsia says, it depends on who your audience is. Remember also, there are political elections now that people are also paying attention to. We always saw a slump around major events like that.
So, now is the time to add some more features or products or pages to your site, in time for the holiday season...

Well at least gas prices are going down so they will have money to spend again very soon. Also google is right in the middle of an update so things are all over the place in the SE results.

September has been great for us, surpassed our Total August gross with another 8 days to spare.
