How many top-level domains are there now? 300? 500? No, it's 1,000

And you probably know about six of them

How many top-level domains are there now? 300? 500? No, it's 1,000

Back in March 2009, there were "only" 280 top-level domains in existence most of them so-called "country code" domains like the United Kingdom's .uk or Germany's .de. Of that 280, 248 were ccTLDs.

That situation has now been turned on its head and the previous 20 "generic" top-level domains - which include the most-famous .com TLD as well as .org, .net, .info and so on - are now 712 large.

Where country-code domains were once 89 per cent of the internet's namespace, they are now just 29 per cent.

Does "namespace" mean "all names of all registered domains" or does it mean "names associated with active websites"?

I was so surprised when I saw the list of options when first searching a while back. I suspect the biggest problem associated with the tlds is the cost. It just seemed too expensive to take a pop at a few, so i declined and stuck with tradition.

I saw a recent blog post about 50 companies who ditched .com for a new GTLD, it was full of terrible names (and didn't actually contain what it said it did). With the lack of traction that .biz, .info, .name ,& .mobi managed it's easy to see that the new ones were mostly about money.

There are some that might catch on such as .(city) but they will have an uphill struggle. The general public will just be confused by most of these extensions unless they see them very often.

I picture people typing-in "www.example.city.com" and "www.example.name.com".

I picture people opening their search engine of choice, and typing example into the search box..
Just like 99.99% of people do now ..
or maybe a tiny percentage saying "OK etc" to their phone ..

While ICANN is still a USA "thing"..they should be charged with racketeering and extorsion with "implied" menaces..
"Non Profit"....my . . . .

They're referring to the entirety of the TLDs I believe...whether registered or unregistered.

And here I am cutting back on my names plus for many there's not a lot of point in having a site if it can't be found.
