Salesforce.com is the new owner of the data.com domain name. Domain Name Newswire cited a press release from domain name auctioneer Moniker stating that Salesforce.com purchased the domain name "for an amount that significantly exceeds the $1.5 million reserve."
The aftermarket for domains, especially those that handle "brand messaging in a word or two", is still quite alive. There have been quite a few decent reported sales, and I suspect far more unreported sales, in the past 2+ years of the down economy.
The future of life and business on the Web keeps arriving. Having a nice address or location will ALWAYS afford the business at the address a measure of advantage, though an address - alone - won't make for success.
