| Domain available - two days later showing registered for past 10 years

Has anybody experienced this? Lately domains ive been searching that have been available show up as registered a few days later and the whois info shows registered nearly ten years ago. Is it possible to fake whois data dates?

More likely a distributed network inconsistency.
