|Automattic a/k/a WordPress.com Acquires WP.com|
Compelling Value Domain for a Global Player or Vanity?
| 4:06 pm on Apr 26, 2009 (gmt 0)|
From the Official WordPress.com Blog [en.blog.wordpress.com].
Acquired from Yahoo, in part because all day long when they refer to themselves (the company) they write or type "WP".
Necessity or vanity?
Wisdom or "just because we can"?

Interesting story about Tiroler Tageszeitung - its really unusual to see a newspaper that was switched on enough to get a really good domain. Especially a non-english language one.
It would be an interesting excercies to see what percentage of two letter .coms are non english language sites.

The branding of the ubiquitous software--one of the most popular ever, WordPerfect--precedes WordPress. It's been around since 1980. It'll take a generation for that to fade.
BTW, WordPress was already #2 for WP on Google. I remember that from when I used to want to visit the Washington Post website.
Even so, I think sites that get visited all the time are best off with the shortest domains. Although most people use bookmarks for sites they frequent.
