I never submitted to BOTW, but I was always in Yahoo and DMOZ from the beginning, probably where they picked up my site.

After googling this further I discover that editors DO add good quality sites for free - but it seems that they only do that for non-commercial sites. My site has a few ebay links - and I also sell items directly myself - so the editor must have been in a generous mood! I think I got away with it because at first glance - by just looking at the home page - the site appears to be purely informational and non-commercial.

Blog submissions are free, but while my listing is on a greybar page, that page is indexed in Google.

I have one web site listed without submission, even if it's monetyzed with the usual Adsense, CPM ads and some affiliate links, all in good taste, of course. The category page is gray barred though :( I'm still very happy to have it.
