Finding appropriate DMOZ category

I'm having trouble finding an appropriate category for a site I want to list in DMOZ. If I enter just the main keyword, all I get are listings in "shopping," while my site is general information about these [things] and is not at all an e-commerce site.

I know choosing the proper category is crucial, but I don't know where to start. Anyone have any suggestions for such a nebulous question?

Either try to follow the tree from the top to the most apropriate place or start in the shopping category you already found and check if it contains "Related categories" that point in the correct direction. If it doesn't, try to look into the parent categories.

If all that doesn't help, try to use different keywords in your search. Sometimes aking a friend who is not in the same busines/hobby/... as yourself helps as well.

"General information" is an oxymoron. Information is by definition specifics. Figure out what specific information (if any) you've divulged, that nobody else on the web knows. That will indicate the topic where an editor would want to list the site.
