| Are directory links considered spam or otherwise devalued by search engines?
Is there evidence for a devaluing of directory links OR their heightened value? |

Do search engines consider directory links spam? If so, it would be interesting to hear the reasons why. In my opinion, I think they CAN be spam, but are not necessarilym so. In other words, I don't think you can generalize. [edited by: Webwork at 3:24 pm (utc) on Jan. 7, 2007]

The search engines will be using far far more sophisticated generalizations than "is a directory" -- and in fact they'll be using a completely different kind of generalization, since "is a directory" is not an automatically identifiable attribute of either a site or a page.
