Strange FireFox "2" behavior

Yes I know it's old but the client is a very large organization and needs a broad range of cross browser support (unlike a certain bank and FireFox I saw in the news today).

I have an outta parent div:

.outta {float;left;width:100%;}

The child elements are split into two (left and right div)

.storyimg {clear:left;float:left;width:5%;}
.storyheadline {float:left;width:85%;}

Just below the .storyheadline I have one last div for the date

.storydate {clear:left;float:left;width:60%;}

So to summarize I have a outta box. Inside I have a left and right div floating left next to each other and a clear div below these so those two divs remain in place.

In FireFox 2 the .storyheadline is ignoring the percentage width and goes full width and is also self-clearing the left div.

The code is too simple to cause any issues so I simply swapped the percentage to em and hey presto it works.

My question though is why is FF2 ignoring percentages but accepting em's and does anyone have any info on the likely cause of this problem as I'm keen to understand why.
