I'm trying to position a logo image with a horizontal list stretching across the rest of the line. For some reason, the horizontal list is placed under the image, not to the right. Any ideas?

ul.menu {
float: left;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background: transparent;
list-style: none;
}

ul.menu li {
float: left;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 1.5em;
text-align: center;
width: 140px;
}

ul.menu li a {
display: block;
width: 100%;
margin: 0;
padding: 63px 0 64px 0;
color: #fff;
text-decoration: none;
}

<a href="/" ><img src="/img/logo.gif" alt="logo" /></a>
<ul class="menu">
<li><a href="/item1" >item1</a></li>
<li><a href="/item2" >item2</a></li>
<li><a href="/item3" >item3</a></li>
</ul>

Thanks in advance
