I am pretty experienced with Wordpress (+ vanilla forum) and am quite sure it can be a good solution but are there good alternatives?

Have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Joomla but can be convinced.

Would prefer recommendations that are strong in SEO and have a good user/programmer community.

Cheers - JoC

Well, Joomla fits all of your requirements. Joomla.org has a very active community, and with a plug in like SH404, it has great SEO capabilities including elimination of duplicate content, built in 301's, highly configurable title, description and keyword tags.

And of course, there is the ability to have a multi-lingual site and many of the higher quality plug-ins support different languages.

If you like Wordpress better than Joomla, you could use the WP Multilingual Plugin
