Having looked around a little more, Drupal with ecommerce module looks OK. Can't face further research so I'm tempted to just go with that. Does anybody have experience that suggests this would be a bad idea?

agree with kinely, joomla with joomfish (multilinguality), you will find a lot of extensions to use for the other functionalities which u need

Thanks for your suggestions. I know joomla v drupal is an old chestnut. Is there anything about it that makes it more suitable for my requirements than drupal?

Some sort of email management for sending updates to select groups of subscribers check extensions section of joomla , its cover all what you need
