Slow Wordpress - Spam?

 7:35 pm on Mar 18, 2009 (gmt 0)

I have a blog using wordpress. The problem is the site is extremely slow. Maybe takaing 10-20 seconds to load a page. The pages are all small in size and all my other sites on the same host are fine.

The blog gets hammered with spam which askimet usually catches but could this be causing the slowdown? If so, how could I fix this?

What kind of spam? Comment bots, or what is happening?

You could ban IPs, but it's likely distributed.

You could look for a bad bot plugin for WP (oe must exist).

You coudl install something like Captcha or WP Hashcash if the problem is the flood of spam comments (how many per day are you talking about?). Akismet only works after submission, so it doesn't stop comments from getting submitted and all the DB load that causes.

The spam is from comment bots. I'm not sure the exact number but they appear to be constant....all day every day. Every time I refresh the page there will be a new one.

They are all coming from the same email address (*******@aol.com) but different ip's.

I will give captcha a go although I wanted to avoid going down this route if possible.
