Google searches tend to find category pages
instead of individual posts - Wordpress (not hosted)

Any thing I can do to make it easier for Google to find the individual post instead of the category page?

Searchers would have to search through zillions of posts on the category page to find the one that answers the search.

Google sitemaps allow you to set a priority to different pages. Try setting a lower priority for the category pages.

Make sure you are only showing snippets on the category pages (not whole posts).

If you want to be clever, do a FULLTEXT query for the referring search string against your posts table for that category, add an ANCHOR on the winning post, and then do a javascript redirect to #thatanchor onLoad

I guess not because I don't know what you mean "hacks" in this case.
