Copyright Clearance Center - Open their mailings!
unexpected check in the mail

 2:54 pm on Oct 5, 2008 (gmt 0)

There was an earlier thread about this topic:

Like several of you, I also thought it was all a scam when I got a letter from this Copyright Clearance Center requesting me to fill up a tax form and personal data. There was also no indication as to what that was all about, so I actually threw away their first letter.

However, I am glad that I opened their next mailing, which I received a couple weeks ago, as it contained a check for, not 25 cents, but over $1,800! Note that they keep 25% of the money they collect as service charge (and, as I did not fill the tax form, there was a 28% tax withholding), but I don't care, it's totally unexpected income. Nice!

Good for you. I've gotten two notices to fill out the tax form but so far no checks at all.

I never filled out any of their paperwork, but they recently sent me a check for four-huundred-some bucks. Granted, their fees were 25% (gack!) and I'm sure they charged the maximum marginal rate for the taxes, but the unexpected cash was nonetheless a pleasant surprise.

Okay, just got my check, too. Not $1800 but a lot more than 25 cents. :)
