We're interested in allowing members to upload recordings of themselves playing in-copyright material, for example doing a karaoke song etc. Does anyone know whether most karoke sites are legit in respect of copyright? Is there some way of handling this kind of material in copyright law?

I have no idea whether the karaoke sites have ligit stuff. If you want to read more about the laws regarding copyright on the internet browse the piercelaw website and search for copyright on the internet.

Don't forget that there will probably be performing rights issues over the backing track as well as the copyright on tune and lyrics.
