I was thinking of starting a hotel/restaurant/attraction review site for a particular destination. So I would basically have a single post for every hotel/attraction and have people write comments, reviews etc for each listing.

I guess it would be something similar to tripadvisor but some posts will be reviews, others would be questions etc.

I would also create useful guides and articles for the place.

Anyone have thoughts or comments on how this idea might work?

The first thing that comes to mind is that you would have to differentiate it from all the other tripadvisor and yelp clones out there. I think you would have to offer something totally unique and different to entice visitors to use your site instead of another.

What that might be I don't know (but if I think of it you'll soon see a new review site on the web).

One difference I can see is becoming known as the local expert for that destination, as opposed to the everywhereness of TA/Yelp/numerous clones.

Depending on the size of the market, if you want to do it mainly for fun and get some pocket money out of it- go for it. If you're thinking about doing it as a serious business to feed you and your family, definitely think twice- it's very doubtful the market would support you.

The place doesn't have many review type sites other than tripadvisor. I know it is not a real original idea, but I was hoping my knowledge of the area would help make a site which is more easily to navigate and has a better site structure. Rather than reviews that tend to be stand alone on TA, I was thinking people would discuss specific aspects of a hotel. Like which room is best, how to get best price and any other kind of "inside" type of knowledge.

There are forums of course for this place and I have seen many of these discussions types of discussions take place, but they are not put together in a single place and tend to get "lost" in all of the other threads.

"if you want to do it mainly for fun and get some pocket money out of it"

LOL. That tends to be the story of most of my sites!

I have a site already that is a guide to living in the place, which does ok. It makes some money from hotel affiliates, which is why I thought to try and move more into the travel side. I understand it is competitive but at the same time, there are lots of sites that look like they were made in front page, but seem to rank very well in Google.
