Why do visitors register?
Finally I got visitors who register, but why?

It has been a while that I was active here but this is still the best place to ask my stupid question.

Last year I did a total rebuild of one of my websites. Its just a lurking informative website, visitors can comment without registration. I even opened the forum topics for anonymous visitors just to get my forum started.. My new website is now online for about 2,5 week, the forum is still empty except the topics I started myself.

Now the fun thing: last week I had 7 visitors from my country who filled out the registration form.. my registration form is just like any other site behind a button: register.. But actually there is not any reason to register, except if you want to post a topic in the forum. None of the newly registered users posted a topic.. so then my question rise:

Why do people register on a website? (haha) Im sure they are not bots or spammers, they are just real people. I've searching here for the answer and searched the lovely useit dot com website but no answers.. only answer on the question how to get visitors to register.

Do I miss something? Do visitors want something that I'm not aware of? Is there any study about this?

If the forum is inactive that would be strange but for an active forum there are features available to registered members depending on the software being used. PM's, subscribing to topics etc. Probably a lot of reasons someone might join.

Thats the problem my forum is empty.. I'm just banging my head with the question what do they want?

Even yesterday I got a email from a user who was struggling to get his password changed. I helped the man but after that never seen him back.

Maybe I can use analytics to find out what they want, then I just need more data.

"question what do they want?"

they probably don't know themselves

I see the same happening on one of my sites and just ignore it. Once in a while I clean out the registrations and delete all the non-actives (some register (humans) and don't even bother to activate their account).
Since they love to register so much, they can do it again next time they want access ;o)
