Facebook Reaches 500 Million Users [bbc.co.uk]
Social network giant Facebook has registered its 500 millionth member, the firm has announced.

The site, which launched in 2004, has gained around 100 million new users in the last six months.

Facebook said the number was "an important milestone" and added that it was "humbled and inspired" by the stories of its users, which it is asking people to share on the site.

Like it or loath it, that's a serious number of members to reach.

Did they take into account my five accounts under different fake names that I never use?

I am sure they count every single account opened, even if it was never used.
Still, the actual number of users is probably still huge and that is a lot of potential customers, if they could just get a proper program going to tap that audience without pissing them off.
I do like the implementation of our store products being shown on our Facebook profile.

Facebook is becoming the "internet" for a lot of users. The web used to be something that you used when you had to find something, or for general browsing, email etc. Facebook has got users hooked into their way of thinking. the www isn't for surfing and email, its for socializing with people and growing a mafia.

Its something we need to embrace. its never been easier to reach a target demographic.

I am trying to get it through my thick skull. Thing is, I don't use it myself.

Good point, but do your users? Its their "friends" that may well be you're target market. Encouraging them to share is the key. I have heard great things about Facebook share buttons.

Yeah I was never keen on those share buttons, did the minimum asked, but Facebook is now too big to ignore and a solid Facebook integration should be planned in the future. I've been playing with their API every now and then. It keeps changing though, which is annoying.
