More reason to start worrying optimizing more for Facebook than Google. Makes you wonder who will be the top internet location by users and visits next year at this rate of growth?

The average U.S. Internet user spends more time on Facebook than on Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Microsoft, Wikipedia and Amazon combined. ...

In January 2010, though, the amount of time the average person spent on Facebook jumped to more than seven hours.

Each American Facebook user spent an average of 421 minutes on Facebook per month, which amounts to more than 14 minutes per day.

Even if you lump together the time spent on Google (Google) (1:23), Yahoo (2:09), YouTube (YouTube) (1:02), Microsoft/Bing (Bing) (1:35) Wikipedia (Wikipedia) (0:15), and Amazon (0:22), it still doesn’t beat Facebook.

I might have missed it, but I really dislike surveys that do not fully explain how they reach their results.

I am sure many are constantly logged into their FB pages but are surfing other sites - which could give FB inflated figures.

Regardless, I still believe that facebook will eventually turn into nothing more than a fancy phonebook and messaging system.

From the quote in the OP.

Which are they talking about....
The average U.S. Internet user...

or
Each American Facebook user ...

Could be quite a difference there.

Re FB time sink:

A young woman I know has given up Facebook for Lent, as of noon today.

It's partly penitential and partly practical. She has all sorts of plans for what she'll be able to do with the reclaimed time!

Depends on two thing...

1) Will facebook think of another game to 'ville.

and

2) Will the webs next great social gathering place be launched yet.

Google isn't banned from nearly as many workplaces as facebook for good reason, the word timesink is accurate.
