Hello there,

We`re new here and thinking about creating a site which is only a forum where people can discuss issues. We`re very confused since there are many forum softwares out there. We compared them but still confused. Below we try to give a summary of what we would like to have:

-Easy installation, administration and forum using
-Poll creation, private messages, user signatures & avatars need to be available
-User profile, user banishment need to be available
-We need guest posting, instant messaging and some kind of spam protection e.g. Captcha - Example :
-Emoticons, attachments, word filtering, user ranks need to be available
-Needs to be compatible with all browsers
-Windows OSs needs to support the forum software
-We want to allow each of our members to start their own blog if they wished to do so
-We want to allow each of our members to decide whether other members/guests are allowed to post comments on their blog or not (don`t know whether it is possible)
-We want to allow each of our members/guests to comment on other members` blogs if the starter of the blog agreed to allow it
-We, owners, want to have our own blog in which we could post stories etc. and we want to allow both members and guests to comment on these
-We want to engage in affiliate marketing thus want to place links & banners on the site. Therefore the forum software must be banner & link friendly
-The forum software must be search engine friendly. We read that vBulletin, phpBB and IPB are all very search engine unfriendly compared to other forum software like UseBB or webmasterworld's very own solution. We do not know whether it is true or not but we desperately need a very search engine forum software
Could you please recommend us a forum software which satisfies or close to the above criteria?

Another thing We know that Joomla/Mambo offers blog extensions but simply cannot find out whether it is free or not and how it works. If anyone has experience with these, please let us know.
Thank you!

Welcome to WebmasterWorld littlebiggirl.

The opensourceCMS site will let you try several software packages out without having to install them. The CMS Matrix site will let you compare the features of several packages.

I'm only familiar with phpBB...

-Easy installation, administration and forum using

Other than the permission set in phpBB administration is fairly easy. The permission set is a little hard to understand but only because it's a very powerful set of tools that will even allow you to manage individual permissions. It takes a while to understand it but once you do you'll have a great utility at your disposal.

It can do all of the above.

Haven't looked but I'm sure there is blog mod, having said that one feature in phpBB is the ability to apply different styles to a forum. What you could do is set up a "blog" within the phpBB framework, e.g the blog would be a forum assigned to an individual user. You'd make style to give it a more blog like appearance. Combined with the permissions set you could accomplish what you have described because again you set permissions even on an individual basis. The benefit is that it's within the phpBB framework so future upgrades and comapatibilty issues are not an issue.

-The forum software must be search engine friendly.

Well I wouldn't lable it search engine friendly but its a vast improvement over phpBB2. There are many mods available to SEO it.

Finally, we have chosen vBulletin.
