Need a Special Feature in My ForumóDoes It Exist Already?

I need a specific feature on my forum. It goes like this:

When somebody subscribes to a thread on my forum, and somebody posts to that thread, the subscriber would get the entire thread emailed to their inbox (actually, maybe just the last page, some threads might be long). If they reply to that email, it would automatically post their reply to the forum.

This is better because most forums just say "somebody posted to your thread". Then you have to click on the link, wait for the page to load, then login.

Kind of like TypePad and WordPress let you post to your blog by email, I need "post to the forum thread by email".

Do any of the available forum software packages out there have anything like this?

The "never visit my forum again" feature.

Why not just use a mailing list manager if you want a mailing list?

It must exist somewhere, because forum members on one of my forums are always emailing their posts (which end up in my inbox, not the thread!). :)

Mailing the whole thread would be quite uncommon, but I'd guess it wouldn't be difficult to hack a "last post" notification into "last 5" or something.

Two thoughts:

1) Most forum operators WANT to bring people back to the forum pages, though you may have a good reason for doing it this way.

2) One problem with post notifications is the massive volume of email that can result. For that reason, it's common that only a single notification is sent - subsequent posts don't trigger another email until the member returns to the forum. That works fine if the member returns to the thread before posting a reply, but if you want the member to reply right from email it could be problematic. Either you'll have to keep providing updates, or the member may post a reply that duplicates other replies.
