I do not see any possible benefit to this, but hey, I could be wrong myself. Is there an SEO/SEM benefit that I am missing? I know the client has a separate blog hosted on wordpress. Perhaps they see a benefit of giving credit somehow? I would rather not put anything other than what is needed on the site obviously. Thanks.

In terms of added value as a result of adding a button, there will be no SEO or SEM benefit whatsoever. At a push, you could argue that the button might increase visitor trust, but I would doubt even that.
