China’s Internet Population Hits 338 Million [blogs.wsj.com]

The total number of China’s Internet users reached 338 million as of June 30, representing a 13.4% increase from the end of 2008, according to the latest report by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), a government-affiliated Web research organization.

Some interesting points:

  • 94% use broadband connections
  • Over 80% surf the Web at home
  • By June 2008, China had passed the United States to become the world's largest Internet market by number of users

I am still struck by the fact 338 million is a tiny fraction of the population of China; and with such poor uptake a cultural adoption of the Internet as a successor to brick and mortar as has been seen in the West is very long way away.
