Empting /tmp/ in Linux?

Msg#: 4441012 posted 6:48 am on Apr 15, 2012 (gmt 0)

Any side effects to doing so? Some folders in there are empty, or were added 3+ years ago. I didn't add any of them, myself.

I'm not well-versed in Linux/Apache; and when I asked my host this question I got a very cookie-cutter response that didn't say much, other than "deleting anything from tmp can have serious side effects, don't add anything in there you don't want loading on reboot"

With some of the blank folders in there, I am questioning their response - most of that stuff seems obsolete. Requesting a 2nd opinion?

A simple solution is to rename/move everything to a new location first.

If your site suffer no ill effects after a few days, and you've tested everything, then I'd feel it's pretty safe to zap it.

Reboot your server and see if it cleans anything automatically first.
