Googlebot Visits Showing In Analytics?

Msg#: 4574595 posted 9:22 pm on May 14, 2013 (gmt 0)

Saw a spike for one site today in "direct" traffic.

When I dug down into "network source", Google Analytics shows "googlebot.com". Browser shows as "Googlebot".

My first thought was that someone was scraping, and somehow appearing to be from the network source of "googlebot.com". However, the apache logs show that all of today's visits from anyone with a user agent containing "Googlebot" are coming from Google's 66.249.7X.XXX network. So, it's not someone spoofing the UA. Also, it wouldn't be trival to spoof "network source".

I uploaded a screenshot [i.imgur.com] from GA.

Has anyone else seen something like that before? Seems like a GA and/or crawler bug.

This is still happening today, but only on this one site, out of dozens I have in the same analytics pool. Odd.

In case this is helpful for anyone else, this started on 5/14/2013, dropped off in volume on 5/17/2013, then stopped altogether on 5/18/2013. No visits showing today either.
